On-site articles
This section of the web site contains articles (stories and essays etc) which have been submitted for inclusion on this site [whereas the directory links to articles elsewhere on the internet].
Please feel free to write and submit something yourself. Your submission can be long or short, formal or informal, complicated or simple. You may also like to write short responses to articles written by others (details about getting in touch are on the contact information page).
Articles are arranged by author (in alphabetical order). Some authors are experienced and widely published, for others this may be their first public work.

Yorkshire and Humber's 'hidden' minority [pdf file]
also available without two diagrams as a web page
submitted by Gary Craig, Professor of Social Justice, University of Hull
While this article is about Yorkshire and Humber, it contains ideas of
wider relevance. Specifically it looks at the problems that result from
thinking
about the Chinese community as one entity (which are similar to the problems
that occur when thinking about any grouping). It also looks at how easy
it is to make incorrect assumptions - for instance that the presence of
Chinese take-aways quietly existing in every town is evidence of 'successful
integration'.
Clare Mendham
My Thoughts on Citizen Advocacy
by Clare Mendham
Having recently moved jobs, Clare discusses some
issues in relation to the running of a citizen advocacy organisation.
This article is critical of some practices, but full of ideas for making
things better.
Quote: "I became
quite
negative
about
the
concept
of Citizen Advocacy ... In the past 6 months since leaving
this work I’ve done a lot of thinking and reflecting, and have come to
the conclusion that there is a place for Citizen Advocacy, if it is done
well. "

Prologue and "The Story"
by Judith Snow
Quote:"Many groups of people who are marginalized today have a history of their people that gives an explanation of present day reality. For example Afro-Americans and -Canadians have stories that tell how their ancestors were enslaved and brought to North America...I have long thought that living as a labeled person requires the skills to live as an alien in a misunderstanding, often hostile, foreign territory.... I often have wished to have a reorienting story, such as might have been told to me as I sat in my Mother's lap..."
Seeing Differently
by Judith Snow
A short article. Quote"...the world is almost always constructed as if
everyone stood and walked. I have been on the second floor of a building
with
no elevator so few times in my life that I can't imagine what a walk-up
dentist's
office or an upstairs bedroom may look like. This might seem inconsequential
to most readers, but it can have profound effects on the life of a person
who uses a wheelchair.
"

inconveniencing a minority as a starting point in
considering bigger
questions.
Getting Support Right - planning support in person centred ways (pdf file)
by Robert Weetman
The support and care services are awash with planning processes, and discussions
over the best approach abound. Organisations often try to "roll out" something that they see as a replacement for the old ways of working. If only
it were that simple.

Notes about producing a booklet about a person (or for yourself) as part
